Insert geometry for roughing and finishing

Use chip control, edge strength and nose radius to match a turning insert to the cut.

Turning inserts work best when the geometry matches the amount of material being removed. Roughing needs edge strength and chip control. Finishing needs a sharper edge and controlled force.

Chip control and edge strength

Chipbreakers should create a manageable chip at the feed and depth of cut used in the operation.

Nose radius and surface finish

A larger nose radius can improve surface finish when the setup is rigid, but it also increases radial force.
