Match the tool to the material
Workpiece material is the first signal for choosing a stable carbide grade, edge preparation and coating. The same tool geometry will behave differently in steel, stainless steel, aluminum, cast iron and hardened materials.
ISO P: Steel and alloy steel
Balanced wear resistance and edge strength support general turning, milling and drilling. Select chip control around the cutting depth and feed.
ISO M: Stainless steel
Sharp, controlled edges and heat-resistant coatings help manage work hardening and built-up edge.
ISO K: Cast iron
Wear-resistant grades and secure edge preparation protect the tool from abrasive chips and interrupted cutting.
ISO N: Aluminum and non-ferrous materials
Polished cutting edges and open flute designs support clean evacuation, low cutting force and good surface finish.
ISO S and H: Heat-resistant and hardened materials
Stable geometry, thermal resistance and wear-focused carbide are important when machining heat-resistant alloys or hardened steel.
Coating guide
- TiAlN: high-temperature performance for steel and stainless steel.
- AlTiN: high hardness and heat resistance for demanding carbide tooling.
- AlCrN: oxidation resistance for stainless and hardened materials.
- Polished or uncoated: clean cutting edges for aluminum, copper and brass.
